I don't understand... Why can't I just write the equation like .1y=3x because the equation says "10% of y is "

Bre, what you propose would violate algebra rules. Original equation is y=3x. If we take 10% of y on the left side of the equation, we also have to take 10% of the right side to keep the equation equal, to get .3x
