I don't understand how "admonishment" is considered negative. I perceive it more like "encourage" when making a request.

If you google it, there are 2 meanings:
Warn or reprimand someone firmly.
Advise or urge (someone) earnestly.

What you refer to is the 2nd meaning. The question is referring to the first meaning.

Please keep in mind that the new GRE test format does not include vocab test in the verbal section. You should think of the vocab drills as exercise to expand your vocabulary in general.
