Anne, you can use any fraction between 0 and 1. Just use 1/4 or another fraction that's easy to work with when you substitute or plug in for k.

Maria, the lines mean absolute value. |x| = x for all x>0, and = -x for all x <0.

For example, |-5| =5, and |5|=5.

I was using decimals instead of fractions. Using k^2=(.25)(.25) I got .062
It's still greater than 0
Which left me to choose the absolute value of K because it can be positive or negative. I know my answer is wrong but can someone explain a bit further

Hi Joelene,

The absolute value is NOT positive or negative. It is always positive. So, |.25| = .25, but .25 is not less than .25. It is equal to .25, that is, it's equal to itself.

Now, if k = .25, then k^2 = (.25)(.25) = .0625. And .0625 < .25. Therefore, k^2 < k, and the answer is (E).
